THRILL OF THE GRILL 2014 TICKETS HIT THE STREETS

Danforth chefs prepare recipes in secret in advance of popular July Event

Toronto (June 2014) – Local Danforth BIA chefs are keeping their recipes and plans under lock and key in anticipation for this year’s fifth annual Thrill of the Grill on the Danforth near Broadview. It will all happen on Saturday, July 19th from noon till 4:00 p.m. Tickets are now available online (www.thedanforth.ca).

The 2014 Danforth Experience Thrill of the Grill will be co-hosted by celebrity chef and event co-chair Lynn Crawford (The Food Network’s Pitchin In) and style and design guru Tommy Smyth (HGTV and House and Home). The other co-chair is Sunnybrook oncologist Dr. Georg Bjarnason.

“Thrill of the Grill brings out the best in our local culinary talent,” said Susan Puff, executive director of the Danforth Business Improvement Area (BIA). “We have five incredible restaurants competing with the local butcher. That says a lot about our members’ commitment to our community and the raising of funds for cancer research in Toronto. Tickets are going fast”

Chefs Ponniah Vijeyaratnam (Allen’s); Danilo Cea (The Combine Eatery, winner - 2013 Celebrity Judges Favourite); Jerry Sathisivan (Factory Girl); Dan Sanders (Globe Bistro); Michael Wallace (Das Gasthaus) and, butchers Zach Davidson and Aiden Galligan (The Meat Department, winner - 2013 People’s Choice).

Contestants will be competing for the People’s Choice Award to be voted on by Thrill of the Grill ticket holders, and the Celebrity Judges’ Favourite, to be decided by a star-studded panel of local celebrities at the event on July 19.

New for 2014, two of our sponsors, Pfizer Oncology and Global TV/Shaw Media, have agreed to a friendly flavoured corn cob ‘Throw Down’ in a separate one-on-one contest that will pit the two for best corn cob side.

Tickets are $15 and include six meaty pork ribs, mini corn cobs and refreshing beverage tastings provided by Thrill of the Grill sponsors. Proceeds will benefit kidney cancer research at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre.

Backgrounder on Thrill of the Grill

Thrill of the Grill (TOTG) is a popular community event organized by the Danforth Business Improvement Area to showcase its merchants and excellent eateries, and to raise funds for kidney cancer research. It will be held July 19, 2013, noon to 4 p.m.

  • The Food Network’s Chef Lynn Crawford (Pitchin’ In) is this year’s co-chair along with Dr. Georg Bjarnason, research oncologist at the Odette Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences. Crawford will host the event with Tommy Smythe of HGTV and House and Home magazine.
  • TOTG has raised nearly $50,000 for kidney cancer research since 2012.
  • TOTG is held in memory of Ross Lewchuk, an award winning Toronto television editor, rib lover and patient of Dr. Bjarnason. Ross passed away in January 2012 after a four year battle with kidney cancer.

Now in its fifth year, TOTG pits local chiefs from five Danforth restaurants and one butcher shop in a sizzling, summer grill-off to determine who can BBQ the best tasting rib.

  • Participants compete for The People’s Choice Awardchosen by ticket holders, and Celebrity Judges Favourite.
  • This year’s contestants are: Allen’s, The Combine Eatery (Celebrity Judges Favorite 2013), Das Gasthaus, Factory Girl, Globe Bistro, and The Meat Department (The People’s Choice Award winner 2013).
  • Celebrity Judging Panel: Anthony Farnell, Meteorologist Global Toronto; Norm Wilner Film Critic and Foodie, Now Magazine; Amy Rosen, Food and Travel Writer; Cynthia Beretta, Beretta Farms, Chef Lora Kirk, Ruby Watchco; Pamela Ross, Vice President, Sunnybrook Foundation; and Dr. Georg Bjarnason, Odette Cancer Centre.
  • 2014 includes a special flavoured corn ‘throw down’ between sponsors Global TV/Shaw Media and Pfizer Oncology.
  • More than 1,500 chowed down on more than 9,000 pounds of meaty ribs in 2013.
