Sidewalk Signs & Sidewalk Painting - What's allowed & What isn't

Good Afternoon BIA Members,

In the last week or so I've received a lot of inquiries and complaints about various signs - either A-Frame or painted on the sidewalks.  Also because we are installing the various CafeTO patios there are a number of MLS officers in the area who are flagging various signage issues.

I thought that I should review what's allowed and what's not:
  • painting on the sidewalks is not allowed by the City of Toronto
  • vinyl signage adhered to the sidewalks is not allowed by the City of Toronto
  • A-Frame signs are allowed but you must have a permit from the City of Toronto and the sign can only be placed in front of your business.  It can't be placed at a different location, it can't be placed in the middle of the sidewalk; and it should be secured with sandbags or something similar to keep it from being blown or knocked over.
As always, if you have any questions about outdoor signage please reach out to me.

Thanks,
Susan
