Keep your Mac Safe from Malware/Adware/Phishing
Take caution when clicking links on the internet and in email.
Malware = software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems.
Adware = software that automatically displays or downloads advertising material (often unwanted) when a user is online.
Phishing = the activity of defrauding an online account holder of financial information by posing as a legitimate company.
Tips for Keeping Safe
- Do not click links in an email that prompt you to change your account or password (unless you prompted the re-set)
- Don't believe everything that pops-up to notify you of something
- Keep your Web Browsers (Safari, Chrome, FireFox) Up-to-date
- Go direct to manufacturer websites for downloads (not referrals)
- Download/stream content from trustworthy sites (iTunes Store, Netflix, YouTube)
- Do not provide credit card information to companies you do not know
- Do not download programs that claim to speed up your Mac from a pop-up (i.e. Mac Protector, Mac Defender)
- Run regular Apple OS X Software Updates (free)
Note. Apple will never request that your Apple ID password be changed automatically. Additionally, Apple will never ask for your password, either by email or by phone. Do not disclose your password by email or over the phone.
