Faces & Places on the Danforth: Desiree @ The Clay Room

We’re back! And we’d like to introduce you to Desiree of @theclayroom

The Clay room was originally established by a woman named Lisa Lowe back in 1995. Desiree purchased the business 10 years later when her husband found an ad for it in The Toronto Star. She used to be an office manager for a venture capital company but had taken off work to watch her kids. Her youngest was around 5 at the time and soon to be going into kindergarten. She was seeking something that would allow her the flexibility to drop off/pick up her kids from school while still working. Part of the purchase agreement she had with Lisa was to have training for a period of time and be available for questions she had as she got her footing in her new business.

Desiree has always been a very handy person, having worked on refinishing and reupholstering furniture in the past. She doesn’t claim to be an artistic person but feels that this business has been a perfect marriage with her personality and her family life. She says it’s a very happy business that has little in terms of any negative aspects. People come in and enjoy themselves and it permeates through the space. You see all kinds of people come through, whether it’s for bachelorette parties, birthdays or just families coming in to enjoy a fun activity together. Desiree says that she loves that most about this community. There’s so much warmth from all that pass through. She has regulars, both adults, and children, some that return each Christmas as a family tradition. She’s seen generations come through, where she’s met them as kids and then begin to bring their own children.

If you’re looking for something to do with friends and family, especially on rainy days like this, then definitely make a visit to The Clay Room. You’ll get to have fun and take home a finished product too!!
